This past Sunday, the 16th, a couple days after Valentine’s Day, filming for “Yeah, A Great Valentine’s” began. (finally…)
Working with my 11-year-old brother, who is my designated camera man, was a whole mission. Giving him a quick lesson on camera shots, while him loudly slurping on his Pepsi was getting on my nerves a little but what else could i expect from him. Another challenge presented was the weather, from the morning it was a mix of cloudy and sunny, and that worried me, because I needed the natural lighting from the sun to get the message across of young, innocent love. It got no better because as we were filming, we had to wait for the clouds to go away to get a “perfect” shot, about every two minutes (so that was a tad annoying) but this is what must happen for plenty of professional shoots.
After we filmed the scenes, guess what, the sun looked perfect, and my brother, my boyfriend and I were like, “are you serious?". Not to mention, we were in a bit of a time crunch. To try and prevent the shots from looking too shaky, I looked for a stabilizer that my father had, but it was not charged properly, so when we tried to turn it on, it kept on moving the phone in different places, it was crazy. Ultimately, we used it as a tool to help my brother hold the phone. Luckily, I got enough footage for the first part of the film intro, but it came with plenty of unexpected challenges that must be hashed out through contingency planning in the future.
What we got done
As mentioned, the first minute of my film intro is complete. The benefit into splitting the film intro into equal parts, was already knowing the amount of footage needed to make up a minute, leading to the production being run smoother.
So according to my “storyboard” I have this done:
1st minute [aka 60 seconds] ~ high key lighting, a tad more saturation.
Black screen (voiceover)
Wide shot: on couple sitting on bench looking at each other (talking) ~
Two shot: from the back of the couple (talking)
Extreme close up: on the couple’s hand intertwined (voiceover)
Two shot: of the couple, still holding hands, comfortable position (voiceover)
Two shot: from the back of the couple (voiceover)
Wide shot: couple talking “let’s take a picture one last time..something like that” (talking)
POV shot: couple holding the phone as if they are taking the picture from that phone. (voiceover)
Additionally, to the wide shot of the couple talking, prior to the POV shot, my brother (as the amazing cinematographer that he is), added panning (specifically down to up panning), for a little extra effect. The way I would analyze it however is: “the director added this unexpected panning effect in this scene to reflect a shift in the couple’s relationship, as it was unexpected for the boyfriend to reveal the news to his girlfriend that he is moving for college”. (that should be an extra 2 marks right there).
Bloopers
Here are some bloopers that we captured during this amazing filming day!
*include video and pictures*
Prior to even arriving at my house, my family stopped at a supermarket, and I had thought about getting some filming done there, but my cameraman had other plans… Let's just say he likes to experiment.
Thoughts…
Overall, I am satisfied with what we have for the first minute, and capturing the effect of comfort, surprise, love. So, for the second minute, I want it to be clear to the audience of the 180 (or even 360– the girl’s life had taken. Also, another thought i had is to not overestimate myself or the production. I obviously have an idea as to how I want it to look, but I must be open minded to it looking a little different than pictured, it could even come out better than what I had in mind.
The next goal on the schedule is get filming done for the second minute done on the 28th (or potentially even earlier than that day), so the post-production and CCR era may begin! (YAY)
I'm going to start including my schedule in every blog so you can see in real time what I get done (and don’t get done…)
