#23 Setting

After careful deliberation, my setting is chosen. I don’t know why I made it sound so menacing but here we go.

Where is it?

In my own home there is a beautiful lawn that stretches out, and has grass, a tall tree, looking straight out of a fairy tale. Ok, I may be dragging it out a bit, but after contemplating whether it will be at the park, at a restaurant, at a library even, I was looking out my window as i am thinking to myself, and then it hit me. My own front lawn.

It is perfect because there is minimal stress when it comes to transportation of materials, and everything I require is here at home. For example, we have a long bench in which the couple will sit on and will be primarily on for the first minute of the film opening, so instead of having to drag chairs or blankets from the house to the park, we can just grab the bench right by the driveway and begin shooting (the film).

Why is setting significant?

The setting of a film sets up the time period, geographical location, which includes how it looks physically, but also the historical and cultural background of that location. It may seem like just a background to a film on the surface; although, where a film is shot at, or the established setting is an important detail that may add to the plot or is significant to a character. Furthermore, setting is significant/important to a film because (according to Film Daft), “The movie setting helps establish a film’s mood, atmosphere, and overall tone, influencing the story, characters, and our perception.”

A setting establishes where a story takes place, giving the audience an understanding of how the characters will act, what conflicts could occur, and associate it with the title of the film. There are different settings such as an urban setting (city/metropolitan area) which already gives the audience a feeling of business, chaos, coffee shops, and subways. Additionally, there are rural settings that set up the feeling of calm, organic, (honestly what comes to my mind is hallmark movies), farmers markets, and small towns. If there is a fantasy looking setting, it gives space for imagination, it is magical, it is a little hard to relate to on the surface, as it is an environment never seen in real life. Depending on the setting, the audience can establish the tone of the movie prior to any dialogue being said.

How does it look?

Below is the landscape and the tree for the first minute of the video, when the couple are together.

Below is the room in the second minute, when the girl is by herself.
