#18 Wardrobe Pt.2

Ok I know…

I had just published a blog on wardrobe, but there was a specific aspect of wardrobe that was forgotten and is pretty important: color symbolism. There are plenty of aspects of wardrobe that contribute to a story, like, style (how it is put together), wear (like if it looks new or not), and especially color. So, let’s divulge the idea and importance of color in wardrobe/costumes.

Color symbolism….

According to a quick search, color symbolism is: “...the use of color to represent cultural, emotional, or spiritual concepts. Understanding color symbolism can help us communicate more effectively, create more impactful designs, and gain insight into the subconscious mind.” [Symbolism Guide, 2023]. So the use of certain colors, in certain colors, can convey different meanings, and is an essential part of media analysis. Color symbolizes the feeling of characters, the feel of a scene, and gives further explanation to film’s underlying message through simply being on screen.

Colors can represent emotions; this chart represents that.

Color

Emotional Association

Red

Love, passion, anger

Orange

Energy, enthusiasm, excitement

Yellow

Happiness, optimism, warmth

Green

Calm, relaxation, nature

Blue

Serenity, trust, security

Purple

Royalty, luxury, mystery

Pink

Love, nurturing, femininity

Black

Power, sophistication, mystery

White

Purity, innocence, cleanliness

Gray

Neutral, practical, timeless

Some examples….

This yellow outfit from 13 Going on 30 (2007) is something that really catches my eye and i find perfect for the wardrobe of the main girl in the video.

This yellow outfit from 13 Going on 30 (2007) is something that really catches my eye and I find perfect for the wardrobe of the main girl in the video. There is a quirkiness and joy that is seemingly alluded by this, and I think it represents her joy, happiness, and feeling "true to herself" or that she has found some purpose. A message that I want conveyed in the first minute: some love, happiness and innocence.

And for the second minute, when the main girl is in her room, sulking about her boyfriend leaving, I got inspiration from this outfit from Never Been Kissed (1999).

It reminded me of something I know, that shows the sign of comfort, that this white jacket worn by Drew Barrymore in this film, looked to be what protected her in the cold, and from conflict, keeping her emotions in check. Relating to the present, with my film intro, the girl will be wearing this blanket hoodie that reminds her of comfort and peace (although temporary). ~shown below

My wardrobe…

Like previously mentioned, my wardrobe colors will consist of light and dark colors to represent the transition between positive/negative and love/heartbreak. Especially due to the chart, wardrobe choices i had was a green shirt, with khaki pants, or a cream dress to reflect the warmth, relaxation and especially happiness felt by the couple prior to their long distance, and after camera flash (began with flash back, now flash forward), the girl is wearing gray and black to reflect mystery, neutral-ness (i don’t know that sound fancy), and ultimately, grief/mourning of the relationship that once was.  UPDATE: [this is like two months later], I decided on the hoodie blanket because not only does it represent comfort, but it is relatable, as girls who experience heartbreak such as that, normally go into their "hole", and wrap themselves in something they know will not hurt them. making this choice is also significant because the wardrobe has the SAME COLORS but is projecting DIFFERENT MEANINGS, because the situation has changed. (i cooked so hard on that)
